Idukki is at blue alert with storage steady at 42.29% and water level at 714.988 m, 17.442 m below the 732.43 m FRL; all gates are closed and spill is 0 cumecs. Recent rain of 59.2 mm and forecasts of 56.2 mm in 24 hours and 87 mm over 72 hours are the main drivers, with flood risk 30 and landslide risk 35; the next alert level would be triggered if continued rainfall raises the reservoir to its higher alert threshold, which is not provided.
Idukki is India's first double-curvature arch dam, built across the Periyar between the Kuravan and Kurathi hills and commissioned in 1976. Together with the Cheruthoni and Kulamavu dams it forms the Idukki reservoir, which feeds the 780 MW underground powerhouse at Moolamattom — the largest hydroelectric station in Kerala.
